Culturally sensitive counselling
I know from personal experience and from my training that it can sometimes be useful to work with a therapist who is from a similar cultural minority background to you. It is an area of interest for me, both in further reading and in my research, as mental health stigma is still very real in wider British culture, and can feel more acute in minority groups. Although I am of the firm belief that all trained counsellors can offer every client empathy, safety and confidentiality in their work, it can sometimes feel more comfortable talking about certain subjects with a counsellor from a background closer to your own.
If you would like to find a BME counsellor in your area, a good place to start is the Black and Asian Therapist Network (BAATN), where you can search for a therapist and find support in your area.
